ABOUT OUR COVID-19 PCR TEST

We use real-time Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) as a form of Nucleic Acid Amplification Testing (NAAT) to detect the presence of SARS-Cov-2 viral RNA in anterior nasal and nasopharyngeal specimens. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends this type of sensitive laboratory test to identify the virus that causes COVID-19 in respiratory specimens. WHAT TO DO AFTER YOU ARE TESTED?

  • If you test positive for COVID-19, see If You Are Sick or Caring for Someone.
  • If you test negative for COVID-19, you likely were not infected at the time your specimen was collected. However, that does not mean you will not get sick or become infected. It is possible to be very early in your infection at the time your specimen is collected and to test positive later, or be exposed later and then develop illness. In other words, a negative test result does not confer immunity or rule out getting sick later.
  • CDC expects that widespread transmission of COVID-19 in the United States will occur. You should continue to practice all the protective measures recommended to keep yourself and others free from illness. See the CDC’s guidelines on How to Protect Yourself.

  3. SunCoast may charge a cash rate in the absence of a provider order or valid patient insurance. This rate is subject to change based on test availability, demand, and national reimbursement rates. SunCoast may request patient Social Security information if CARES act billing is appropriate.
